In your dream house everything has a permanent place, exactly how you want it. Your car usually has one too own parking space. Ideally, this should be covered to protect your vehicle from, for example, dirt or damage caused by hail. But do you already have a favorite? Garage or covered parking space? Both parking variants have good reasons. You just have to decide what you particularly value.
Variety of designs
Of course the garage or carport should ideally visually complement your home. It is therefore advisable to plan your parking in advance. But which option actually has more design variations, and what are the limitations?
Garage
With a garage you now have the choice between many different materials (mainly steel or concrete), colors and equipment variants differentiate. Of course, everything is also available in many sizes, for one or more vehicles or even built-in, so to speak with an «underground base». Garage doors have also changed significantly in recent years, so much so that they fit harmoniously into the overall picture.

Depending on where the garage is positioned, there are very different advantages. If the garage is connected directly to the home, a «climate buffer» is created and a direct passage can be integrated into the residential building. If you position the garage so that it hides the garden from the street, you will get privacy and sound insulation. This means you can enjoy even more privacy in your free time.
However, when locating a garage, you should keep in mind that in most building areas the distance from the street must be at least 5 meters! Also, carefully check your property development plan to make sure your plans are feasible. As you can see, you don’t have a completely free hand when it comes to positioning.
Covered parking space
A carport is a kind of «light» version of a garage. The roof of the vehicle can be made of different materials, the most common being wood, aluminum or steel. Depending on how much you open the carport, it can protect you as a shelter only from above or with side walls also protected from lateral atmospheric agents. A big advantage of the carport is that it is not necessary to comply with the rule of distance from the road. Of course you gain valuable space, especially on small properties or terraced houses.

If you do not completely close the roof of the carport, but rather design it like a pergola, you have creative design possibilities with climbing plants. In this combination additional trusses can be used as side walls.
Protection factor
For many people a vehicle is not just a means of transportation but rather a means of transportation State symbol that you want to be well protected. Garages and carports differ greatly in this regard.
Garage
The garage is a separate, locked room where your personal belongings are stored parked safely can be. Whether it’s vehicles, bicycles or tools, snow, rain and heat don’t stand a chance. But even four-legged friends in the neighborhood are kept away from your vehicle. THE minimizes the risk of worm damage and prevents unsightly paw marks on the hood.
Covered parking space
With a carport you can choose based on location and design limited protection from direct atmospheric agents restore. The animals, however, are not kept away at all and in the worst case it can damage your vehicle.

Commitment and costs
Even when it comes to costs, the difference between a garage and a covered parking space is clear. However, this should not be the only factor you base your decision on. After all, you want to use the garage or carport long term. Therefore, think carefully about which points are most important to you.
Garage
The advantage of the garage being a separate space can also be seen as a cost disadvantage. It is important to ensure that no moisture builds up in the garage and causes mold damage. For this reason, a ventilation system is often necessary, which obviously plays no role in a carport.
On the other hand, a garage does not necessarily have to be a luxury property. Prefabricated garages, for example, are significantly cheaper and can be found in the desired location more quickly than brick-built variants.
Tip: Many car insurance companies offer a discount if a garage space is available!

Covered parking space
If you are practical, in theory you can too build a carport yourself and save a lot of money. If you prefer to entrust it to professionals, you can still spend much less than going to a garage. Depending on the material chosen, there are hardly any subsequent costs. In terms of cost alone, the carport is unrivaled.
House with garage or carport?
When choosing between a garage or a carport, it all depends on your individual point of view. If you decide purely on cost and want to keep the worst weather conditions away from your vehicle, a carport may be sufficient. However, if you want to further protect your vehicle from theft and animals and perhaps even create additional storage space, a house with a garage is probably better for you.
