Setting up the bathroom Arrange the bathroom furniture

For most people, the bathroom must offer one thing above all: sufficient space. How much free space you have available in the bathroom depends not only on the size of the room, but above all on the correct positioning of the bathroom furniture. If arranged in the most advantageous way possible, even a smaller room can become an oasis of well-being. In this post you will find advice on how to furnish your bathroom by expertly positioning the furnishings.

Would you like to start designing your bathroom and are looking for advice on lighting, color and storage space? In our blog post “New or Remodeling Bathroom: Everything You Need to Know!” You will find everything you need to know to design your bathroom.

Setting up the bathroom: Planning is essential

Of course, there is no one-size-fits-all solution for bathroom design. In any case, when furnishing the bathroom, the furniture determines its structure. No matter how much space you have available, you should always plan where to place your furniture before purchasing your equipment. This avoids messy rooms and furniture that cannot be positioned optimally. So measure your bathroom or, in the case of a new construction, take the floor plan that specifies the dimensions. Based on this, create a sketch and test on paper where you want to place which element. You should always take into account:

  • the distance between furniture and objects
  • the depth of individual bathroom furniture
  • their usability and the space needed for this (for example doors and drawers)
  • available storage space
  • Placement of connections in the bathroom

Bathroom furnishings: what to pay attention to

Basin

The bathtub is the highlight of the bathroom and only makes sense if there is sufficient space in the room. Freestanding bathtubs have a particularly luxurious look. But make sure there is enough space between the furniture and the walls when furnishing your bathroom. If they are too close to the tub, the bathroom will quickly appear “crowded.” The same goes for closed bathtubs. Also in this case there should be air between the sanitary ware and the storage furniture such as shelves or wardrobes.

Shower

Showers take up a lot of space and therefore it is better to place them in a corner of the room. Especially in smaller bathrooms you should do without a solid shower screen, as it visually reduces the space. Glass shower enclosures can be used instead, which not only look elegant but also allow a view that makes the bathroom seem larger. If you prefer your privacy screen to be flexible, you can also attach a rod with a shower curtain that can be closed if necessary.

You can find more information about shower variants in our article “Advantages and disadvantages of different shower variants – Rötzer meets your sanitary needs”.

Toilet

Nowadays, bathrooms and toilets are increasingly placed in separate rooms. If you want to integrate the toilet into your bathroom, you have two options to choose from: leave it open in the bathroom or hide it in a niche. For toilets visibly positioned in the room it is useful to consider the depth of the adjacent furnishings. The toilet itself is an element that protrudes quite a bit into the room, which is why lower furniture should be placed in the immediate vicinity. The change visually creates more space and makes the bathroom appear airier.

Bathroom sink

By furnishing your bathroom you can create targeted twists. A beautiful sink, for example, is a great eye-catcher. Feel free to deviate from the standard. The sink does not necessarily have to be placed next to the toilet. Place it where it looks best or let it visually disappear into the room as you wish. For example, directly next to the door or in combination with a storage room, it looks quite discreet. A smaller bathroom also benefits from softer furniture. In this case, an exposed base such as an exposed cabinet is more suitable than a completely closed and solid cabinet.

Cabinets and shelves

Every bathroom needs space to store cosmetics, towels, etc. Again, the choice of furniture makes a big difference. Cabinets and tall shelves often appear huge and take up a lot of space. They are best suited for bathrooms with sufficient space. If you don’t have much space available, you should opt for floating shelves. As a handy side effect, these make cleaning the bathroom easier because you can clean them in the blink of an eye. When furnishing your bathroom, you should also use corners and niches as storage space. Sometimes items can be stored there in an extremely decorative way without visually restricting the space.

Division of space with the help of a T-shaped wall

Don’t want a square bathroom? A T-wall is ideal for dividing the room into smaller areas. In this way it structures the bathroom and offers you the possibility of arranging the furnishings in an alternative way.

In front of the shower, the T-wall acts as a privacy screen and at the same time as an installation wall for water and electricity. The toilet area also benefits from the T-shaped solution, as it allows the toilet to disappear stylishly into a niche. The additional walls also offer the possibility of attaching wall shelves or towel racks, which intelligently create storage space in the bathroom.

Positioned directly in front of the long side of the T-shaped wall, the furnishings become the center of the room without being completely free. Depending on your preferences, the focus can be placed on the bathtub or an elegant double sink.

Rötzer tip: «Do you want to visually enlarge the room? Then attach a mirror to the T-shaped wall. Above a vanity unit with freestanding sinks, it will be a real highlight.»

Good light also helps create a feel-good atmosphere in the bathroom. Be sure to schedule a window. In our article “Window planning made easy – everything you need to know” we offer you an overview of window planning.
