Every kitchen project in a new construction is individual: your needs matter!

Before you start designing, you need to define for yourself what importance the kitchen has in your home. Do you like cooking? Alone? With friends? Where do you usually eat? Do you prefer to have kitchen appliances within reach on the worktop or do you prefer to hide them in cupboards? Do you like to cook elaborately with lots of ingredients and spices or are your dishes more minimalist? All these points are important for subsequent planning. Because your daily usage determines your priorities.

5 tips for designing the kitchen in a new construction

1. Architecture is the direct implementation of your needs

Take the opportunity to design the kitchen of your dreams exactly according to your wishes. You can choose between a modern, open kitchen or a more traditional, separate kitchen.

Expert advice for kitchen design: If you prefer an open kitchen, in this article you will find out how odors do not spread throughout the house thanks to central ventilation systems.

When talking about kitchens, a broad distinction is made between six different types:

  • Single line
  • Two lines
  • L shape
  • U shape
  • G shape
  • Kitchen island

With the last three variants you certainly have the largest work surface, but of course you also need adequate space. This fundamental architectural design decision depends mainly on your preferences and previously defined needs. Also consider what suits the style of your home and adapt your kitchen fronts accordingly.

However, one thing is very important for all shapes: the correct working height. Choose an ergonomic height and possibly vary it if several people of different heights want to work in the kitchen at any time.

2. If you systematically plan your storage space, you will save a lot of time later.

Base cabinets, wall units, chests of drawers, pharmacy cabinets, shelves, roundabouts… how do you want to store your kitchen utensils? If you approach this question systematically, your storage space will remain free in the long term and, above all, it will save you kilometers on foot. Incidentally, the question arises not only about the type of storage, but also about its depth. Think realistically about how many items you need to store and how you want to present them. Because nothing is more annoying than a new kitchen that doesn’t give you enough space.

3. Functional and comfortable: the seats create relaxation areas.

Of course, your kitchen should be primarily oriented towards optimal food preparation. But don’t underestimate it the seating effect. A built-in counter with bar stools or a small table with chairs visually loosens the kitchen and makes it look more comfortable. In an open kitchen this usually happens because the rooms flow into each other and the dining area is often directly connected.

4. The heart of every kitchen design is electronics.

What a good kitchen depends on is properly installed electronics. Whether lighting, oven and hob, refrigerator, extractor hood, dishwasher or sockets: sufficient energy sources and the right devices are essential. But what technology do you really need? Is a traditional oven enough for you or do you prefer a latest generation combined appliance? At eye level or under the hob? And which hob should it be: glass ceramic, induction or gas? Everything has its pros and cons. But in order to be able to combine everything well and not miss any functions, you need to plan in advance down to the last detail. Of course, the placement of devices is closely related to the efficient use of storage space.

Expert advice for kitchen design: Ask for advice on the efficiency classes of the devices. Energy saving models are always preferable.

Be careful in the kitchen there are no gray areasthe work surface must be optimally illuminated. There should also be enough sockets so that mobile devices such as mixers or food processors can be used flexibly at all workstations.

5. Left-handed or right-handed: this makes a difference in kitchen design.

While it may seem funny at first glance, when it comes to our tips for kitchen design in a new build, whether you’re left-handed or right-handed also matters. It depends, for example, on whether it makes more sense to mount a spice rack to the left or right of the wall. Because humans are creatures of habit and automatically prefer to grasp with their dominant hand. Which arm do you work with the most and therefore need more freedom of movement on that side? Depending on which hand you primarily use, your working direction will vary. This also applies, for example, to sinks with drainboards or the installation of door hinges. With proper planning, walkways can be designed effectively so you can intuitively find your way around your new dream kitchen.
