Whether planning a new construction or a renovation project: When it comes to the right heating source, many building families think about fireplaces or Swedish stoves. Fireplace stoves awaken in us the desire for warmth, for a welcoming fire, for intimacy. But modern fireplaces can do much more: not only do they help create a comfortable atmosphere, but they are also an efficient source of heating. If you plan well from the beginning, nothing will stand in the way of your dream of a romantic fireplace. This is why we answer the most important questions of building families when it comes to fireplaces or Swedish stoves as a heating system or as an addition to the heating system.

In an interview: Swedish oven expert Frank Schwichtenberg
We talked about it with Frank Schwichtenberg. He is a Swedish oven expert and consultant at PLEWA. PLEWA – cooperation partner of Rötzer-Ziegel-Element-Haus – develops, produces and sells intelligent concepts and economical solutions in the areas of heating systems and exhaust technology. Particularly interesting is the combination of stove and chimney developed by PLEWA – Frank Schwichtenberg also told us interesting details for the building families.
Mr Schwichtenberg, what is the most common question construction families ask you about fireplaces?
As a rule, there are three or four important questions for building families to make the right decision for a fireplace: These include the issue of fine dust, the room air-dependent or independent modes of operation, the interaction with living room ventilation systems and often also the fear of overheating rooms in highly insulated houses.
There was once a prevailing opinion that open fires and Swedish or fireplace stoves were good for the mood, but were harmful to the heat balance. Has it changed?
Absolutely! Today, for example, it is possible to include a solid fuel stove in the total energy calculation. For some heating variants it is even necessary to achieve a correspondingly positive balance. In our consultations we can show the building families in great detail with examples what positive effect a fireplace has on the heat balance.
What options are there for homebuilders to consider a fireplace when designing their home?
Of course, our modern “fireplace stove systems” are ideal here. They save space and work independently of the ambient air. So simple and safe.
A fireplace with a built-in chimney – at first glance it looks harmonious. But is it necessary to respect certain room conditions?
As a rule no. We offer different variations that can be easily integrated into all common living space design concepts. From the wall, to the corner, to the corner. The systems can be clad in a simple and visually appealing way.
And the fuel? Pellets, logs, wood chips… what is compatible with the Swedish fireplaces and stoves presented?
Here we rely on the most original type of fuel. On firewood. In addition to the heat, the play of the log flames also offers something to see. Furthermore, at PANORAMA we are working on a gas and a pellet appliance. These are designed and built in such a way that the flames are up to 90% similar to those of a wood stove.
Thank you so much for this in-depth interview, Mr. Schwichtenberg!
