6 poisonous plants you may have at home – Home and family > Plants

We love plants because they decorate our homes and gardens and bring nature closer to us through freshness and color. But sometimes their beauty can hide a dangerous secret: some house or garden plants are poisonous.

If ingested they can endanger the health and even lives of children or pets. Here are some poisonous plants you may have in your home or garden:

Poisonous plants: Dieffenbachia

If her name doesn’t mean anything to you, you definitely recognize her from the photos. It is a very common houseplant because it is easy to care for and its green leaves with yellow stripes have an interesting appearance. But Dieffenbachia can be deadly if ingested, causing inflammation of the airways and blocked breathing. Even touching broken leaves can cause burning and itching.

Poisonous plants: yellow daffodils

The bulbs are the most poisonous part of this seemingly harmless plant, present in almost all gardens. A plant loved for its spring flowers, narcissus can be very dangerous when the bulbs are ingested. Causes vomiting, diarrhea, convulsions or arrhythmia. Flower arrangements with daffodil bulbs in pots can be very dangerous for children, while bulbs planted in the garden are dangerous for dogs.

Poisonous plants: Hydrangea

A plant beloved for its enormous flowers in shades of pink, blue and white, hydrangea is anything but harmless. It contains a very dangerous toxin called cyanide. But before you give up on this plant, know that it only becomes fatal if ingested in large quantities, which is unlikely.

Poisonous plants: Leandru

Leander is one of the most dangerous plants you could own. Even a small part of such a plant can be fatal. Just one leaf is enough to put a child’s life in danger. It causes lethargy, decreased heart rate and tremors. Avoid this plant if you have small children or pets. Also, wash your hands thoroughly after touching it.

Azalea or rhododendron

Appreciated for its particularly beautiful flowers, the azalea is a houseplant found in many homes. But all parts of this plant are poisonous. Ingesting an azalea leaf or flower causes abdominal pain, difficulty breathing, paralysis, coma and even death.

Poisonous plants: philodendron

The secretion produced by this plant can irritate the skin and mouth, causing inflammation of the respiratory tract, difficulty breathing, heartburn and stomach pain. Severe reactions are rare, but it is best to keep philodendron out of reach of children and pets.
