Even in the Middle Ages, palaces and castles had bay windows. This method of facade construction has persisted to this day, albeit for different reasons. You can read all about the bay window, its advantages and disadvantages and the types of bay windows here.
What exactly is a bay window?
A house with a bay window is a real eye-catcher. But what exactly is called a bay window? The term itself also includes some special shapes, but in its basic form the bay window is:
An enclosed, windowed extension of a room projecting from the facade of the building. It can extend over one or more floors and rests on protruding beams, so it has no contact with the ground.
If you define the term “bay window” a little more broadly, it also includes some variations, such as: Excuse me or the Gaube. Die Excuse me it starts at ground level, so it is in contact with the ground and this is why it is also called Standard designated. If the bulge is only in the roof, it is called a bulge Gaube.

Since a balcony can also be covered and glazed, the transition from a house with a bay window to a house with a balcony is seamless.
House with a glass window? Advantages and disadvantages
Like all decisions related to building a house, the house with a bay window has advantages but also disadvantages. We have summarized them for you here:
Advantages of a house with a bay window
More light! If a bay window faces north, additional light can flow through the side walls to the east and west. If a bay window is built through a corner, light can enter from as many as four sides.
More individuality! Stained glass windows enhance the facade and are one of the most popular ways to personalize a home. The placement of a bay window can distinguish a manufactured home from similar homes and create a focal point.
More space! Bay windows create additional living space. This advantage is particularly evident in narrower properties. Homes must maintain a minimum distance from neighboring properties, but bay windows are exempt. The bay window can easily protrude up to 1.5 meters from the facade. However, this only applies if the bay window does not occupy more than a third of the width of the respective external wall and is located at least two meters away from the neighboring border.
More structure! As mentioned in the previous point, a house with a bay window has additional space in the form of more or less large niches. These can serve, for example, as a reading corner or dining area and thus structure large rooms.
Disadvantages of a house with a bay window
Higher costs! A house with a bay window means more work for the construction company. Accordingly, additional charges apply. These vary depending on the construction, size and elements used in the bay window.
A stained glass window added later is even more expensive. That’s why it makes sense to decide for or against before building a house. The reason for the high costs is the subsequent construction measures to be taken, such as dismantling the existing facade or expanding the existing floor.
Greater energy loss! The more a home’s exterior shape deviates from the basic rectangular shape, the greater the points of potential heat loss. This exact problem presents itself in a home with a bay window. It is therefore important to pay particular attention to particularly careful insulation and good windows, otherwise higher heating costs will quickly arise.
Summary:
Advantages
- Light
- individuality
- living space
- spatial structure
Disadvantages
- Additional costs
- Energy loss due to poor workmanship
Types of stained glass
A bay window is not just a bay window. It is possible to characterize different types of bay windows. A distinctive feature is the geometric shape. Here they are to be mentioned:
- Trapezerker
- Nematodes
- Rectangular bay window
There are also some bay windows characterized by other properties:
- Eckerker:
This is placed on the corner of a building. This means that light falls into the room from four directions. (see advantages)
- Window:
This form of bay window projects from the facade above the height of the window without parapet and has windows all around. - Winter garden: Another special form of bay window is the glazed conservatory. Depending on the amount of sunlight, it can quickly become very hot, so you should definitely consider shading options.
